Into Madakhel, a green canyon in the AlUla desert

The desert around AlUla runs hot and open, then the ground narrows and the walls close in, and you step into Madakhel. The air drops a few degrees. The light goes soft. A thin line of green holds to the canyon floor, fed by water you cannot see, and for the next two kilometers the desert behaves like something else entirely.

A short walk, an easy pace

You reach Madakhel by 4x4, out past the edges of AlUla into country that does not announce itself. The trail is just over two kilometers and easy underfoot. There is no scramble, no exposure, nothing that asks more of you than a steady pace and a free morning. Families walk it. First-timers walk it. The point is not distance. The point is what the distance holds.

Rock, shade, and small signs of life

Sheer sandstone rises on both sides, layered and wind-worked, and the canyon opens and closes as you move. You pass from sunlit ground into deep shade and back again. Your guide reads the place with you: the geology stacked in the walls, the desert plants rooted in the gaps, the occasional bird call that carries off the stone and takes a second to fade. Slow down and the canyon fills with detail you would walk straight past at speed.

A garden the desert built

Madakhel is greener than the country around it, and the contrast is the whole experience. This is not a planted garden. It is what the land does on its own when a little water and a lot of shade meet in the right place. You walk to the quiet heart of the canyon, stand in it for a while, then turn back at the same easy pace. About three and a half hours, start to finish.

Before you go

Wear boots with ankle support and bring a day pack, a hat, sunscreen, and a layer for the shaded stretches where the air stays cool. The walk runs year round, but the cooler months make the easiest company. Everything else, the route and the reading of it, comes with the guide.

If you want AlUla beyond the famous overlooks, the Madakhel Garden Hike with HUSAAK is a good place to start. Easy ground, cool air, and a guide who knows what the walls are saying. You set out from AlUla Adventure Camp by HUSAAK and let the canyon take it from there.
